ArchiMate® is the technical standard of The Open Group, which offers a common language for the description, construction and operation of business processes, organizational structure, information flows, IT systems and technical infrastructures, as well as architectural design for classic buildings.
The ArchiMate Framework is a division of enterprise architecture of business, application and technology layers. In each layer, three aspects are taken into account: the active elements, the internal structure and the elements that define the use or transfer of information.
ArchiMate® is partly based on the IEEE 1471 standard . It was developed in the Netherlands through a project team from the TELEMATICA Institute in collaboration with several Dutch partners from government, industry and academia.
The development process lasted from July 2002 to December 2004 and cost approximately € 4 million. The development was funded by the Dutch government and business partners, including ABN AMRO and ABP Pension Fund.
In 2008, ArchiMate was owned and managed®transferred to The Open Group and the ArchiMate standard was published in February 2009®1.0. The latest version is ArchiMate® 3.0 of June 2016, which adds increased support for strategic modeling-oriented capabilities, new entities representing physical resources, and a general metamodel showing the types of entities and the relationships between them.
